The scene in Genesis — the earth without form and void, darkness over the deep — confronts us with the reality of lives that seem disordered, confused, and empty. Still, the Spirit of God was moving over the waters; the divine presence precedes the Word and the action. In Christ that presence is fully revealed: the Word who was with God and was God (John 1) is the One who speaks and brings forth light where there had previously been only darkness.
When God said "Let there be light," creation moved from the possible to the actual; the creative Word separated light and darkness and named Day and Night. Likewise, the Word of Christ illuminates our understanding, reveals priorities, and establishes direction. Pastorally, this calls us to make room for Scripture and prayer, allowing the Word to name what was formerly confusion and to bring practical clarity to our everyday choices.
The sequence of the account — the boundary that separates the waters — shows that God not only illuminates but also orders and establishes boundaries that sustain life. The Lord creates borders that protect, discipline, and enable growth; thus we are called to obedience and to the practice of holiness in small decisions. The Spirit who hovered over the waters continues to prepare the soil where God works renewal, and our responsibility is to cultivate that soil with faith and faithfulness.
If today your life seems formless or covered by darkness, turn to Christ, the Word who brings light and order: surrender your fears, listen to His Word, and allow the Spirit to work in you. The promise is concrete — the Word of God transforms chaos into creation — so rise with confidence and respond to the call to live in the light that He gives.
