I have against you: you have abandoned the love you had at first. This phrase, taken from Revelation 2:4, is not only an ancient accusation but a constant call to the church and to every heart that has tasted the flame of the gospel. The love at first is the simplicity of faith: to believe without reservation, to seek God with the whole heart, and to reveal the grace of Christ in deeds that witness who He is. When we lose that first ardor, religious practice can take shape without life; routine replaces intimacy, and service loses the flavor of what was freed by grace.
This devotional invites us to recognize the distance that can arise between what we profess and what we live. It is not a judgment without hope, but an invitation to daily conversion: turn your eyes to Jesus, allow the Word to examine us, confess failures, and renew the commitment to love God and neighbor with the same intensity with which we were reached by the love of Christ. The first love is not a passing emotion, but the foundation of a life that remains steadfast in faith, in obedience, in holiness, and in generous service.
May we, each day, rekindle this fire: seek God's presence through faithful prayer, meditate on the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, and realign priorities according to the kingdom of God. Returning to the first love is to rediscover the reason for our hope: Jesus is the center, the source, and the goal of everything. May our daily practice overflow in responsible love, in persevering faithfulness, and in confident joy, where the love we receive becomes the love we give to brothers, to the community, and to the world.
