Caleb: courage, faith and perseverance

Sibelle S.

Joshua 14:14 reminds us that Hebron belonged to Caleb’s descendants because he was obedient and persevered in following the Eternal. Caleb did not ask for an easy place; he asked for the mountain where difficult enemies lived, taking on the fight that needed to be fought. Even in old age, he did not leave the work to others, because his standing before God made him claim what had been promised to him.

Caleb’s faith appears concrete: in his speech he refers to what God had said at least four times, showing that his hope was grounded in the divine word. Biblical faith is trust in the promise and readiness to act; it is not about passively waiting for comfort, but about moving in obedience to the voice of the Lord, even when the battle seems challenging.

Pastorally, we learn to combine memory, courage and responsibility: to remember God’s promises, ask the Lord for strength, and assume the role He entrusted to us, without transferring to others what He called us to. For those who grow old or feel weary, Caleb’s example is liberating — age does not annul the calling, and perseverance in following the Eternal continues to produce an inheritance.

Look today at your mountain and ask the Lord for the same boldness as Caleb: name the challenge, affirm God’s promise over your life, and advance in obedience. Go forward in faith; the God who sustains His people is faithful to fulfill His word and will give you strength to conquer what He promised.
