Marriage: Becoming One Flesh

The word of Genesis presents us with a foundational act of the marital relationship: the man leaves the care of his father and his mother, cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. This "leaving" is not an escape but a reorganization of bonds; it is the transfer of primary loyalty, creating a new nucleus where two histories intertwine. The "cleaving" points to an intimate and permanent commitment, and the expression "one flesh" indicates that marriage involves body, heart, conscience, and shared purpose — the totality of life together.

In the light of the New Testament, this mystery gains Christological depth: marriage is an image of the relationship between Christ and the church. The sacrificial giving of Christ who loves his bride shapes the conjugal vocation of love that sanctifies, protects, and serves. Conjugal unity, then, is not merely emotional but spiritual; it is the fruit of grace that allows the couple to reflect, in their fragility, the redeeming action of Christ who unites and heals what was broken.

In pastoral practice, this requires concrete choices: establishing loving boundaries with families of origin that do not suppress the conjugal covenant; prioritizing daily communion — prayer, conversation, physical presence, and faithful sexuality — as spaces where unity is cultivated; and seeking restoration when disagreement tears apart intimacy, turning to forgiveness and repentance grounded in the grace of Christ. Marriage thrives when each spouse takes responsibility for their part in breaking down barriers and building trust.

Therefore, I encourage you to see marriage as a vocation that calls for cross and grace: leave what hinders intimacy, unite sacrificially, and work each day to be, with Christ, one flesh. Seek the Holy Spirit to renew love, ask for and offer forgiveness, and take practical steps today to protect and deepen this covenant — God is faithful to complete in you the work of unity he began.
