Gold, silver, and precious stones endure; wood, hay, and straw burn up. But if our work depends on human recognition, appreciation, or personal security, we risk losing what is valuable before the testimony of eternity. The call is to build with enduring materials: the truth of the Word, the grace that transforms, the humility that recognizes that everything we do is for Jesus and for His kingdom.
The good news is that, even when the work seems to be consumed, the text consoles us: the builder will be saved, but as one who narrowly escapes through a wall of flames. There is no definitive defeat for the one who remains in Christ; there is mercy and salvation in the midst of trial. This reminder motivates us to live with integrity, to correct course when the straw mixes with the gold, and to seek a life that reflects the glory of Christ in every decision, in every family, in every job. In finishing, may our trust be in the Lord, who strengthens us to persevere and drives us to build with purpose, so that when the day comes, we may hear: Well done, good and faithful servant.
