In Genesis 1:7, we see God shaping creation with careful intention: He makes the expanse and separates the waters below from the waters above. This is not random activity, but the deliberate work of a wise and good Creator. The chaotic waters are not destroyed; they are put in their proper place. Everything God does is good, and everything He orders is purposeful. This verse quietly teaches us that God is not only powerful, but also deeply orderly. When He works, nothing is wasted, and nothing is left without meaning.
The same God who separated the waters is the God who orders our lives today in Christ. We may look at our circumstances and feel like everything is in pieces, scattered and confusing. Yet God is not absent in the chaos; He is present, setting boundaries, rearranging, and placing things where they truly belong. In Jesus, He has already begun a new creation work in us, taking our sin, guilt, and disorder and bringing forgiveness, healing, and direction. Even when we cannot see the full pattern, Scripture assures us that His purposes are good and wise. The God who formed the heavens can be trusted to form our days.
Often, we want God’s work to look immediate and obvious, but Genesis 1 reminds us that creation unfolded step by step. First the light, then the sky, then the land and plants, and so on—each day revealing more of God’s good order. In a similar way, God may be separating “waters” in your life right now, creating space, setting limits, or moving you from one season to another. It might feel like loss or confusion, but in His hands it is part of a larger design of goodness. The cross itself looked like chaos and defeat, yet it was the central act of God’s saving order for the world. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, God has already guaranteed that His ordering work in you will end in glory, not ruin.
So when you feel overwhelmed, remember this simple line: “And it was so.” What God decides to do, He completes, and what He completes is good and in perfect order. Ask Him today to bring His gentle order into your relationships, your work, your schedule, and your inner thoughts. Invite the Holy Spirit to show you where you are resisting His boundaries or doubting His goodness. As you surrender each area to the One who separates the waters, you can rest knowing that nothing in your life is beyond His wisdom or His care. Take heart: the God who brought order to creation is faithfully, patiently bringing order to you, and He will not stop until His good work is finished.
