In His Name, We Move Forward

Jesus’ simple, piercing command—do not hinder him—invites us into a deeper trust that the work of God is larger than our own boundaries. In a world eager to catalog loyalties and draw lines, the Savior redirects our eyes to the expansive mercy of God’s kingdom. The moment the unnamed follower does a miracle in Jesus’ name, a door opens that would otherwise stay shut: a recognition that power from God is not bound to our preferred group or method. When we see another at work in the name of Jesus, even if they are not part of our exact circle, we are taught to affirm what is true and helpful, and to resist the temptation to gossip or condemn. The Gospel reshapes our expectations—ministry is not about control, but about alignment with the gracious movement of God.

In this brief scene, we are reminded that unity in the body is not sameness, but a shared devotion to Jesus. If a miracle is done in His name, it bears witness to His authority and goodness, not to our own credentials. The challenge for us, then, is to cultivate a heart that guards the gospel against division, while still discerning truth and accountability. We are called to be for one another, not against one another, and to celebrate the Spirit’s work wherever it shines, provided it harmonizes with the core witness of Christ’s lordship and love. Our exercise of faith becomes a discipline of humility: acknowledging God’s grace at work beyond our preferred boundaries, and inviting others to join in the blessing of the kingdom.

As we meditate on these verses, let us ground our hope in Jesus’ central message: there is no competition in the kingdom of God, only cooperation with the Spirit. When we see a brother or sister serving in the name of Jesus, we are urged to affirm what honors Him and to pray for unity that bears witness to the world. This passage invites practical steps—speaking well of others, resisting rumination over disagreements, and actively encouraging movement that advances the gospel. In our daily routines—at work, in family, among friends—let the posture be one of support and encouragement, praying that Christ would increase while we decrease. And in the quiet moments of waiting and faith, trust that God’s mission is bigger than any single group, and that He is gracious to use many hands for His glory. May you walk forward with confidence in His name, knowing that you are part of a limitless work of love and salvation, and may you encourage others to join in, with hope and joy.
