When the First Step Is Offered to God

Denise F.

As we look at the Genesis 22 narrative, we are invited to contemplate not only the act of sacrifice but the heart’s willingness that anticipates God’s call. God does not seek only what we have in terms of material wealth; He points to intimacy, to the presence that stands before Him, ready to obey. Abraham responds with reverent simplicity: Here I am, Lord. And in this response lies the essence of faith: not retention, but radical availability.

The question the annotation raises moves us inward: if God asked for what you love most, would you be willing to give it up? Many times we think the test of faith lies in great riches or achievements; however, the text shows that true boldness is to offer the heart. God desires willingness for the first step, a walk of intimacy that anticipates obedience, even when the path begins with questions, silences, and a silence that seems extreme. The blessing of Abraham, then, is not only in the outcome, but in the faith-filled response that stands before the divine mystery with trust.

This discipline of the heart leads us to the practice of constant presence: cultivating a life of prayer that seeks not only answers, but becomes a dwelling for God. The intimacy the Lord desires is the one that transforms habits, choices, and relationships, revealing that the first step of faith is, above all, a relationship surrendered to the Author of life. And when we obey in this direction, we experience that God’s grace sustains, that the Lord provides what is necessary, and that the path of faith opens with the certainty that He is with us in every step.

Therefore, I encourage you to begin today the movement of surrender that God requires: even in the face of the unknown, offer what is most precious to His heart. May our response be a “Here I am” that does not depend on guarantees, but on confidence in the faithfulness of Him who calls. May Jesus, the perfect image of obedience, remind us that true Christian greatness begins with a heart available to the first step, trusting that God’s presence sustains the journey and blesses us as we obey.
