Do Not Be Afraid: The Lord Goes Before You

Lizette M.

In Joshua 11:6 the Lord speaks clearly into the tension of impending battle: "Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire." God not only promises victory, he gives specific instructions to Joshua and Israel about how to act after the victory. The command combines prophetic assurance with concrete steps, revealing a God who speaks into fear and orders the people’s response.

This word to Joshua teaches us about God's sovereignty and providential leadership. He is not surprised by our enemies or our fears; he is ahead of the situation and determines the outcome. The injunction to hamstring horses and burn chariots shows that God’s deliverance often includes removing the means by which the enemy could return. Promise and prescription go together: trust the promise, then obey the prescription God gives.

Practically, this means our courage is rooted in obedience. When anxiety or opposition rises, we are invited to hear the Lord’s voice, believe his promise, and take the steps he commands—whether that is prayer, confession, setting boundaries, or practical stewardship of resources. Obedience is not a passive waiting but an active trust: we prepare as God directs, we relinquish outcomes to him, and we dismantle what would empower the enemy in our lives so that his victory endures.

So do not be afraid. The Lord goes before you, has secured the outcome, and gives you the steps to walk in his victory—take them with courage and obedience. Take heart and step forward: the God who promised Joshua will be faithful to you as you trust and obey.
