The command Moses cites in Deuteronomy 6:1 is simple and urgent: God has given statutes and rules to be taught so that his people will do them in the land they are about to possess. This is not a distant, theoretical demand; it is a pastoral summons for every season of transition. Whether your promised land is a new home, a changing role, a maturing relationship, or a fresh stage of faith, the Lord’s pattern is the same — he teaches, and he expects obedience so that you may take hold of what he has given you.
Obedience here is not mere rule-following but formation of the heart. The statutes and commandments in Deuteronomy were meant to be bound to the heart, repeated in daily speech, and lived out before family and neighbors. In Christ we see the law’s truest aim fulfilled: he reorients our desires and gives us the Spirit to obey from love rather than compulsion. To be taught by God is to be shaped inwardly so that our outward actions reflect his character; this is how we mature into stewardship of whatever land he assigns us.
Practically, be intentional about the means by which God teaches. Receive his Word daily, listen in prayer, submit to wise counsel, and test obedience in small, concrete steps rather than waiting for perfect clarity. When you face uncertainty about the territory ahead, choose the next faithful act — speak truth, serve faithfully, keep Sabbath rhythms, repent quickly when you stray. Each obedient step is training for possession: the Lord forms endurance, wisdom, and humility as you move forward into the promises he has prepared.
Take heart: the God who taught you yesterday continues to teach you today, and he equips you by his Spirit to do what he commands. You are not left to master the path on your own; the Teacher walks with you into the land. Trust his instruction, practice faithful obedience, and go forward with courage — he will bring you into the inheritance he has promised.
