Safely Speaking the Name: Courage in the Face of Opposition

In Acts 4, the early church faces a clear command to silence the name of Jesus, and yet the truth remains irrefutable: there is salvation in no other name under heaven. The verse sets a stark contrast between human decree and divine revelation. When obedience to God is challenged by pressure from authorities or popular opinion, the faithful are invited to anchor their confidence not in the strength of their voice alone, but in the power of the gospel proclaimed in the name of Jesus. The central promise remains unaltered: salvation depends on Jesus, not on clever arguments or conformity to the latest trend. This is a reminder that our words must be disciplined by devotion to Christ, not by the fear of men.

The note from your reflection—“they told him not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus but they are doing the right thing”—points to a holy paradox: the right thing sometimes looks dangerous or unpopular in human eyes, yet it aligns with God’s will and authority. When the apostles choose to obey God rather than men, they model a heart oriented toward God’s sovereignty. Prayer, Scripture, and the Spirit’s prompting become the compass guiding believers through times when obedience carries cost. The right thing is not always the easy thing; it is the faithful thing that testifies that Jesus alone has the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and by which the Church is formed.

This devotion invites us to examine how we respond when proclamation is restricted. Do we retreat into silence or press into steadfast reliance on the gospel’s power? The Acts account does not deny the reality of opposition; instead it reveals the church leaning into corporate resolve, prayer, and faithful proclamation. The gospel does not depend on our popular affirmation but on Christ’s victorious work. As you walk through your days, let your speech be seasoned with grace, your courage rooted in Christ, and your assurances grounded in the truth that salvation rests in Jesus. When confronted with pressure to dilute or omit the message, reaffirm your commitment to speak truth in love, trusting that God honors faithful obedience.

You are called to endure in hope and to extend the invitation of grace. The right thing—speaking in the name of Jesus—remains essential for salvation and for witness. May you be strengthened by the Spirit to stand with humility and boldness, to discern when to speak and when to listen, and to point others to the only name given for salvation. You are not alone; the risen Christ goes before you, and the church stands with you in prayerful faith. Be encouraged: the gospel prevails, and God’s people are called to bear witness even under pressure.
