Deliberations on Justice, Mercy, and the Misery of Force

In Deuteronomy 3:6 we face a historical reality of conquest: the total destruction of cities and their inhabitants. It is a passage that obliges us to examine the harshness of human justice when it is intertwined with the holiness of God. As Christians, we must uphold the distinction between the action of a sovereign judge and the divine invitation toward mercy and grace that is fully revealed in Christ. We do not seek excuses, but to understand that the Bible is not exhausted by an arithmetic of violence, but points to a larger drama: the need for redemption, the breaking of sin, and the hope of a kingdom that is not conquered by blood and iron, but by the love that transforms.
