Unshakable as Mount Zion

In Psalm 125 we find a firm and comforting image: those who place absolute faith in the Eternal are unshakable like Mount Zion. The image of the ring of mountains that surrounds Jerusalem reminds us that God's protection is not momentary, but envelops his people continuously. This calls us to root our trust not in circumstances, but in the presence that encircles and sustains.

The text also states that the scepter of the wicked will not prevail over the land of the righteous; if it did, even the righteous would be corrupted. This truth offers pastoral assurance: the justice we seek does not rest solely on our own strength, but on the authority of the Lord who preserves what is good. In practice, we are called to resist fear and moral complacency, relying on God's faithfulness to persevere.

✱ ✱ ✱

The psalmist prays asking mercy for the good and separation from those who walk in unscrupulous ways. As a community of faith, we are called both to compassion for the upright and to firmness in turning away from practices that mock holiness. Trusting in the Lord's just action frees us from the temptation to seek revenge; our responsibility is to cultivate integrity, intercede, and live according to the vocation given to us.

May the promise of peace over Israel reach us personally: by remaining firm in faith and honesty of heart, we will experience the peace that only God grants, even amid difficulties. Therefore, fix your eyes on Christ, remain upright and surrender your fears to the Lord—walk protected, persevering, and hopeful.
