Love That Believes and Keeps: A Devotional on Faith in Christ Jesus and Love for the Saints

When Paul commends the Colossians for their faith in Christ Jesus and their love for all the saints, he places before us a pattern that is both vertical and horizontal. Faith in Christ anchors us to the eternal reality of who He is, while love for the saints anchors us in the present community of believers. The paschal mystery and the gathered church meet in a single Christ-centered reality: faith that rests in Jesus shapes a love that reaches others. Consider today where your faith is fixed and how your love is being poured out toward brothers and sisters in the journey of discipleship. If your heart drifts toward private piety without neighbor-love, invite the Spirit to re-center you in the gospel’s relational calling.

This passage invites us to examine the living evidence of faith: it expresses itself in acts of love toward the saints. Faith is not a private fortress; it is a missional, communal trust that binds believers together. When you pray, ask God to widen your scope beyond your own needs to include the people whom Jesus has joined to you by grace. Reflect on specific ways you can encourage, forgive, and stand with a fellow believer today. In doing so, you participate in the ongoing work of Christ, who unites diverse hearts into one family through the cross and resurrection.

The beauty of Colossians 1:4 is that it shows how God’s work in Christ produces a tangible, contagious reality—faith that trusts Jesus and love that blesses others. This is a call to ongoing conversion: let your faith deepen in Christ, let your love expand for all the saints, and let your life become a testimony to a gospel that reconciles hearts and renews communities. Ask the Lord to prune any areas where fear, pride, or neglect have dulled your devotion. Then step forward with renewed hope, praying for strength to grow in faith and to love more faithfully, trusting that Christ is at work in you and through you for His glory.
