Before the Cord Breaks

The image of the silver cord in Ecclesiastes 12:6 confronts us with a harsh and consoling truth: there is a delicate bond that sustains life — a thread that joins the body to the soul. The preacher calls us to remember God while this bond still exists, because the things that keep us here are as fragile as silver and glass. Taking the vision seriously is to accept that our existence is not self-sufficient; it depends on the Presence that gives us breath and meaning.

Thinking of the "cord that bound the body to the soul" leads us to meditate on the created unity between the physical and the spiritual. We are not merely a body that houses a soul, nor merely a spirit that wears flesh; we are a single person sustained by a continuous gift from God. When we neglect God, living as one who lives by habit or pleasure, that bond wears thin: conscience blunts, faith pales, and life loses its bearings. Acknowledging the vulnerability of this cord is to admit our dependence and to make room for the grace that restores.

In pastoral practice, remembering God before the cord breaks involves the necessary discipline and repentance. Cultivate personal revival — sincere confession, prayer that brings God’s presence, the Word that corrects, and community that sustains. Care for the body as a temple and the soul as a cell of communion with Christ: repair spiritual cracks with repentance, do not postpone reconciliations, and live with intentionality, knowing that each choice strengthens or weakens the bond that God sustains.

Therefore, do not wait until the cup is broken to turn your eyes to the Lord. Today, while the cord still keeps body and soul united, turn in faith, ask for forgiveness, and allow Christ to reestablish and strengthen that bond. Be faithful now — there is abundant grace for those who remember God with a contrite heart; rise and live in the confidence that He restores those who turn to Him.
