There is a biblical and pastoral distinction between hearing with the mind and hearing with the heart/spirit. Ephesians 1:17-19 reminds us that it is the Father of glory who gives us the spirit of wisdom and revelation, and that He illuminates the eyes of our heart. Before reason arranges words and arguments, the Spirit plants an inward perception that makes present the hope of the calling, the riches of the inheritance, and the power that works in us.
When believers receive an impression, an inner prompting, or a conviction, the first response should be prayer and faith: to pray asking for confirmation, to ask that, if it is not from God, it fall into oblivion; and to pray that, if it is revelation, it would resonate throughout the whole being. This pastoral practice is not superstition, but alignment with the Pauline promise: to ask God for the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that understanding may grow. Active faith does not replace discernment; faith summons the clarity of the Spirit.
The illumination of the eyes of the heart is not merely feeling, but the production of fruit: clarity concerning the hope of the calling, understanding of the riches of the inheritance in the saints, and assurance in the face of the greatness of God's power toward us. Practically speaking, this is manifested when we turn to Scripture to test the impression, withdraw into prayer to listen in silence, surrender our will in order to obey, and consult the mature community for confirmation. Thus the mind receives what the spirit was already teaching, and life is transformed by the operation of God's power.
Therefore, ask today, as Paul did, that the Lord grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation; practice watchful prayer and the faith that waits for confirmation, making yourself willing to obey the light that comes. Trust that, as you open your heart and pray with simplicity, God will illuminate, take care of what is not from Him, and pour out discernment and interpretation for what is His voice — walk in courage and faithfulness to that revelation.
