Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us that God has made everything appropriate in its time and has put into the human heart a longing for eternity.
Paul, in Romans 1, complements this truth by declaring that God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, are clearly perceived in creation; God reveals himself in the order of the world, but this revelation is not fully understood by human reason. There is, therefore, a beautiful and unsettling tension: God makes himself known and, at the same time, humanity remains limited in its perception.
The Gospel of Romans also exposes the consequence of this limitation: the human tendency to suppress the truth and to exchange the glory of God for images and fleeting satisfactions. Even with the desire for eternity planted in our hearts, the corruption of sin clouds our understanding and leads us to seek human solutions for spiritual longings. As pastors and brothers, we must recognize that the inability to fully perceive the work of God is not merely intellectual, but moral and existential — an invitation to repentance.
The practical response follows two lines: humility before God's sovereign timing and faithfulness in seeking his full revelation in Christ. Let us not be content with vague intuitions; let us seek Scripture, prayer, and communal life where God confirms what he has already written in creation. The Christian faith does not promise immediate clarification about every mystery, but it offers the person of Jesus Christ as the definitive revelation of the Father; as we draw near to him with repentance, our spiritual eyes are gradually opened.
Therefore, if today you feel the ache of this desire for eternity and the frustration of not understanding everything, remember: God planted this longing as a seed of hope and calls us to trust in his timing and in his manifestation in Christ. Persevere in prayer, study the Scriptures, confess what obscures your vision, and live in obedience; thus, even without seeing everything, you will walk securely toward the fullness that God has promised. Keep faith and hope alive.
