The Importance of Examining Prophecies

The passage from 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 calls us to a posture of discernment and respect regarding prophecies. Often, in our Christian walk, we may encounter messages that impact us in different ways. Some may sound like powerful promises, while others may seem like mere empty words. However, the Apostle Paul guides us not to treat prophecies with disdain, but to examine them carefully. This invitation is not just a call to criticism, but to reflection and the pursuit of the truth found in Christ. As we look at prophecies, we must remember that their purpose is to draw us closer to the heart of God and to guide us in our spiritual journey.

Examining prophecies requires an open heart and an alert mind. We cannot simply accept any message that presents itself before us, but we must seek the wisdom that comes from above. In James 1:5, we are reminded that if we ask God for wisdom, He will give it to us generously. Therefore, when we encounter prophetic words, it is essential that we do so in prayer, seeking the confirmation of the Holy Spirit in our lives. This active pursuit of truth will help us discern what is good and edifying, allowing us to retain what truly brings us closer to the Lord and strengthens us in faith.

Moreover, it is important to understand that we are not alone in this journey of discernment. The faith community, the Church, plays a vital role in helping us interpret and understand prophecies. In Acts 2:42, we see that the early Christians devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. This practice should continue among us. Sharing experiences and reflections with other brothers and sisters in Christ offers us a richer and more complete perspective. Thus, we examine prophecies not only individually but collectively, seeking unity in the body of Christ and building each other up with what is good and true.

Finally, as we retain what is good and discard what does not edify, we are called to live a life that glorifies God. This practice of discernment brings us closer to Christ, who is the very Truth. In times of uncertainty and confusion, let us be motivated to seek the light of Christ in all the messages we receive. He guides us on our path and gives us discernment to know what is good. Therefore, I encourage you to be like the Bereans, who examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so (Acts 17:11). May your faith journey be marked by a deep love for the prophecies that come from God, and may you always retain what edifies and glorifies the name of Jesus.
