The Unity of Marriage in Light of Scripture

Sibelle S.

In Matthew 19, Jesus leads us to reflect on the essence of marriage, turning to creation and God's intention in creating man and woman. He reminds us that, from the beginning, the Creator established a sacred union between man and woman, which goes beyond a simple relationship. By saying that the two become one flesh, Jesus emphasizes the deep intimacy and unity that should exist in marriage. This union is not only physical but also emotional and spiritual, reflecting the very image of God. Therefore, when addressing issues about marriage, we must always return to Scripture, where we find the foundation for our married life, instead of being swayed by human opinions and fleeting trends.

Jesus, in responding to the Pharisees who questioned Him about divorce, did not delve into rabbinical interpretations but turned to the Word. This attitude teaches us that, in times of crisis or misunderstandings in marriage, it is essential to seek divine guidance and not the voices of the world. He invites us to reevaluate our relationships through the lens of Scripture, recognizing that marriage is a sacred covenant established by God. From this, we can understand that separation is not God's original plan, and that, amidst adversities, He offers the necessary grace to restore and strengthen marital bonds when both are willing to seek this direction.

The issue of unity in marriage is a central theme in Christ's message. The idea that two become one is not merely a metaphor but a spiritual reality that must be lived out daily. When we commit to living this unity, we are called to set aside selfishness and cultivate sacrificial love, which is essential for the health of the relationship. Love in marriage is not just a feeling but a daily decision to care for, forgive, and support one another. Thus, as we dedicate ourselves to this journey together, we reflect the union between Christ and the Church, which is the ultimate expression of love and surrender.

Therefore, if you find yourself in a challenging moment in your marriage, remember that the Word of God is a safe guide. Do not be discouraged, for the Lord is by your side, ready to help in building a solid and harmonious relationship. He calls us to persevere, to seek understanding, and to cultivate unconditional love. May each of us daily remember that what God has joined is sacred and should be treated as such. Trust that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, it is possible to restore, strengthen, and celebrate this precious covenant.
