If the LORD does not build the house, the laborers labor in vain who build it; if the LORD does not guard the city, the guard keeps watch in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of anxious toil; for He gives to His beloved even in sleep.
Our central note reminds us that every work or plan without God is useless. It is not about abandoning diligence, but about repositioning diligence in the presence of God. The design of the Christian life is not an isolated self-determination, but a daily cooperation with the Lord's will: pray, seek direction, and entrust results to Him who holds tomorrow. It is not about living detached from responsibilities, but about living aware that rest and effort have a limit before which God’s faithfulness is revealed. If we fret about results, we forget that the security of the work lies in the fidelity of the Author. To recognize that “He gives to His beloved even while he sleeps” is a call to rethink our goals, to align each plan with the divine will, and to trust that true security does not come from our impermeability to fatigue, but from the sovereignty that works through our obedience and faith.
