A Touch of Jesus: Between Jairus's Urgency and the Woman's Patience

We see in Mark 5:21-34 a man of authority, Jairus, who parts the crowd to ask Jesus to come and lay hands on his daughter so that she may live. His request springs from desperate hope, and his humility reveals that even human power needs the Creator. Amid the pressure of the crowd, Jesus pauses and accompanies the father in his sorrow, reminding us that Christ's compassion does not reject anyone's vulnerability but embraces it with patience and presence.

But the scene does not end there. A woman who had been suffering from a bleeding flow for twelve years draws near to Jesus in a fearful yet determined way: among the crowd, she touches his cloak with faith, trusting that even a single touch is enough to heal. Instantly, her hemorrhage stops and her life is restored. Jesus perceives that power has gone out from him and asks, “Who touched me?” In that question lies an intimate relationship: it is not an impersonal miracle, but an encounter with a person who believes, who approaches, who hopes. Her faith, quiet yet powerful, is the spark that activates grace.

Jesus’ response to the woman and his following with Jairus teach a central truth: faith is not in the greatness of words or in the number of people present, but in the trust placed in Him. “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” It is faith, not ritual, that opens the door to the kingdom of God amid uncertainty. And in the midst of the trial, Jesus invites both to wait on his word: to Jairus, to continue with faith even when the news seems contrary; to the woman, to walk in peace from the touch that heals her. Today, the invitation is the same: draw near to Jesus with faith, recognize your need, and let His presence bring peace and renewal to your story. Be encouraged: God does not abandon those who trust in Him; His power is manifested in weakness when we cling to His promise.
