Emanuel: The Name of My Son and Its Meaning

When choosing my son's name, I immediately remember the promise of Matthew 1:23: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and He shall be called Emanuel," which means God with us. Giving that name is to proclaim before God and people that the divine presence is the foundation of the life that begins. It is not merely a label; it is a theological confession that points to the incarnation of Christ and to the ongoing promise that God dwells among us.

This confession shapes the way we raise our children. Naming a child Emanuel is to take on the responsibility of living out and teaching that God's presence is not remote but practical: in prayer rites, in biblical readings at the table, in discipline guided by grace, in hospitality that reveals Christ to others. Parents should cultivate an environment where the meaning of the name is realized in spiritual habits that the boy experiences as real — answered prayer, offered forgiveness, and practiced faith.

Theologically, Emmanuel reminds us that God entered human frailty; the Redeemer took on flesh to dwell with us in times of joy and sorrow. This gives your son's name a pastoral depth: he is reminded that he is not alone in temptations, losses, or decisions. God's presence does not eliminate suffering, but it illuminates it with redemptive purpose; thus, to raise this son is to help him recognize Christ's activity in his own story and to serve as a channel of that presence to others.

Finally, live this name with courage and care: pray over its meaning, demonstrate it with deeds, and confess it in difficulties. As parents, trust that the God who became one of us will sustain, shape, and send your son to live out his name. May this decision be both a blessing upon him and a call for you, daily, to point to Jesus — God with us — in every step; go forward with faith and hope.
