When the Light of Christ Changes Everything

Paul reminds us that the center of the Christian message is not us, but Christ Jesus as Lord. This brings a deep rest: we don’t have to impress anyone, just point to Jesus. Our life, our stories, and gifts are just a frame to showcase the beauty of Christ. When we forget this, the weight falls on our performance and we end up exhausted and frustrated. But when we put Jesus back at the center, service stops being a burden and becomes a meaningful privilege. We are messengers of a glorious news, not protagonists of our own work.

The apostle also describes himself as a servant for the love of Jesus. He does not serve out of obligation or to look good, but out of love for the one who loved him first. This is the root of all true Christian service: not pride or guilt, but gratitude. When we understand how much Christ has loved us, a genuine desire to serve others is born in us. Thus, our dealings with people change: we no longer see them as a burden, but as recipients of God’s love. Being servants out of love is a way of telling Jesus: “What you did for me, I want to reflect it towards others.”

Paul connects this calling with a profound work of God: the same one who said at creation, “Let there be light out of darkness,” has made His light shine in our hearts. It is not about a slight optimism, but an inner miracle. God has ignited in us the light of the knowledge of His glory in the face of Christ, that is, by contemplating who Jesus is. Every time we look back at Christ in the gospel, that light is renewed and reminds us who God is and who we are in Him. Therefore, the Christian life does not rest on techniques, but on continually looking at Jesus with wonder and faith. The more we contemplate Him, the clearer our internal darkness becomes.

In the midst of your daily struggles, this passage invites you to lift your gaze from yourself and fix it back on Christ. You don’t need to shine with your own light; God’s light already shines in your heart through Jesus. Today you can serve, love, and persevere knowing that it is not about your greatness, but about His glory. Let His face illuminate your fears, your decisions, and your weariness, and ask Him to remind you that you are His servant out of love. Even if you feel weak or insufficient, the light of Christ is stronger than any darkness within you. Keep moving forward: the glory of God in the face of Jesus is enough to sustain you and guide you step by step.
