Zerubbabel: the Lord's signet ring

Sibelle S.

The book of Haggai brings us a timely and hopeful word: “On that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “I will take you, Zerubbabel, my servant, son of Shealtiel... and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you.” Inserted in the context of the reconstruction of the temple and the restoration of the people after the exile, this declaration reveals that God not only rehabilitates physical structures, but appoints leaders by his sovereign choice to lead the people into the new phase of the covenant.

The symbol of the signet ring communicates authority, identity and representation: whoever wears it speaks and acts on behalf of the one who sealed them. In Christ we see the consummation of that seal — all who are in him receive a new identity and a delegation to fulfill the divine purpose. Zerubbabel is thus a type of leadership entrusted by the Lord; his appointment reminds us that the effectiveness of the work of restoration depends on someone clothed and recognized by the Lord of hosts.

For the man of God called to exercise leadership, the word to Zerubbabel is deeply practical: divine choice does not exempt one from faithfulness, rather it demands it. Leading in reconstruction implies perseverance in the face of weariness, submission to God's order, courage to make decisions that reflect the Lord's will, and humility to acknowledge that authority comes from Him. Being a signet ring today means managing households, churches and public responsibilities with character, a Kingdom vision and dependence on the Spirit.

If you feel called to some work of restoration, remember that the Lord knows your name and places you where necessary; trust in the promise of the divine seal. Rise to fulfill the task He has given you, remain faithful in the small responsibilities and allow the identity of Christ in you to guide every action — thus you will see the restoration God promised fulfilled. Stand firm and advance; the Lord has chosen you and sealed you for this time.
