Ask, Seek, Knock: Seeking Christ Above in Unity

Jesus’ simple invitation in Matthew 7:7–8 — “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” — is not a promise detached from our identity in him. When we read it alongside Paul’s call in Colossians 3:1–3 to set our hearts and minds on things above, and Jesus’ prayer in John 17:23 for his people to be one, a single picture emerges: the efficacy of our asking is rooted in union with Christ and the unity of his body. Asking is not an autonomous bargain but the expression of a people whose lives are hidden with Christ in God.

To ask, then, is first to seek Christ. Colossians reminds us that if we are risen with Christ, our desires are reoriented; we no longer long primarily for what is passing but for what is eternal. Prayer that bears fruit flows from this reorientation. Likewise, Jesus’ prayer for oneness in John 17 shows that the Father’s answering is reflected in a communion that manifests his glory to the world. Our petitions become channels of grace when they are shaped by the life we share in Christ and when we pursue them in humble, reconciled community.

Practically, this means cultivating practices that align our asking with the reality of being hidden in Christ: daily Scripture and meditation to lift our minds to things above; honest confession and mutual forgiveness so our fellowship embodies the unity Jesus prayed for; persistent, expectant prayer that returns again and again to the feet of Jesus; and asking in his name, seeking his will, knocking until doors open according to his wisdom. When answers seem delayed, examine whether your heart and your community are aligned with Christ’s priorities, and continue seeking with patient faith rather than retreating in self-sufficiency.

Be encouraged: the promise stands. The God who calls you to seek him has already made you one with Christ and calls his people into union with one another so that our asking is not in vain. Keep setting your mind on things above, keep praying together in the name of Jesus, and keep knocking in faith—he hears, and he will open the doors in his time.
