Consider Jesus, Our Faithful High Priest

The writer of Hebrews begins with a summons that still carries weight for us: "holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession." That calling reorients everything—our identity, our work, our rest—so the first pastoral task is to fix our attention on Christ. To consider Jesus is not merely intellectual assent but a daily, devotional gaze that shapes how we think, pray, and choose amid the small and large demands of life.

Hebrews deliberately sets Jesus alongside Moses to sharpen the point: both were faithful, but the place of Jesus is higher. Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house; Jesus is faithful as the Son over God’s house, counted worthy of more glory. The imagery of builder and house reminds us who crafts and sustains the household of faith: God is the builder, and Christ, as apostle and high priest, mediates that building work into our lives. This means our confidence is not in human leaders or systems but in the faithful work of Christ who both reveals the Father and intercedes for us before him.

Practically, living under that truth reshapes how we respond to trial and temptation. If Jesus alone is the faithful high priest, then our perseverance depends on clinging to him, confessing unbelief when it creeps in, and encouraging one another so hearts are not hardened as in the wilderness. We exercise faith not by ignoring difficulty but by bringing our weakness to the One appointed by the Father—learning from Moses’ faithfulness and yet trusting the superior work of Christ, whose priesthood secures our hope and keeps the household of God standing.

So hold fast to your heavenly calling by looking to Jesus daily: study his word, bring your doubts to him in prayer, and spur one another on in faithfulness. He is both the apostle who speaks the Father and the high priest who pleads for you—rely on his faithfulness, follow his lead, and encourage your brothers and sisters to do the same. Take heart: Christ’s faithful priesthood holds you, and you are invited to persevere in hope and obedience.
