Choosing Counsel over Convenience: A Covenant Kept at a Cost

Brent W.

In Joshua 9:14-15, the people act with visible eagerness to secure a settlement, yet their eagerness is not matched by a seeking of the Lord. They rely on their own understanding, take provisions, and sign a covenant without consulting the Lord’s guidance. We are reminded that quick plans born from human perception can lead us into costly undertakings when God’s wisdom is not sought first. The central temptation lies in preferring immediate peace or favorable terms over patient trust in God’s direction, a pattern the writer names as deceived reliance on self rather than seeking the Lord.

This is not merely a historical note on a misplaced decision; it is a mirror for our souls. When we rush to conclusions about relationships, decisions, or future plans, we may be tempted to lean on what seems practical rather than what God has revealed. The text invites us to pause, to ask for God’s counsel, and to anchor our plans in prayer and Scripture. The consequence of neglecting divine guidance is not only personal confusion but a communal compromise that binds generations to outcomes they did not choose and cannot fully control. Yet grace is present: even when missteps occur, God can shape them toward his purposes as we return to him in repentance and prayer.

The remedy offered in Scripture is not a vague moral resolve but a return to dependence on the Lord. We are called to seek his counsel, to listen for his voice through his word, and to align our steps with his kingdom purposes. By asking for divine wisdom, we guard our families, our decisions, and our witness from the corrosive effects of self-reliance. Let us also learn to distinguish between a desire for peace and a peace that comes from obedience to God. When we repent of the impulse to act without God, we open ourselves to his guiding hand and his sustaining grace. May we cultivate a posture of continual conversation with God, so that our choices reflect his will and bring forth blessing rather than unintended entanglements. Keep your eyes on the Lord, and trust that his counsel, though sometimes costly, leads to steadfast faith and enduring peace.
