Sowing the Work of God: Fruit, Root, and Life

Denise F.

Jesus then taught them many things through parables, such as this one: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. As he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where there was a thin layer of soil, and it sprang up quickly, because the soil was not deep. But when the sun rose, the plants withered; and since they had no root, they dried up.

As we hear this parable, we question what we have planted for the work of God. Our sowing reveals what truly dwells in our hearts: words that are lost to the wind or deeds that bear fruit for the glory of the Father. Being a sower requires care: the path, the rocky ground, the fertile soil. Without a root, the plant changes pace when the heat of trial arrives. Thus, reflect: what kind of soil have you offered to the seed of faith?

If your planting has borne fruit, praise God for the grace that renews perseverance in the life of those who walk in the light. But if there is still hard ground, labeled by unbelief or by the repetition of empty words, trust in the action of the Spirit that soils the ground with mercy so that the root of hope may deepen. For the true Christian is not only one who makes noise, but one who lives the secret of a life transformed by the Word. What kind of fruit have you seen on the path you have traveled?

May today we be encouraged to persist in the divine work, planting with faith, persevering in the root that sustains, and waiting in God’s time for the maturation of fruits. If the seed depends on the grace that feeds it, may our daily practice be a culture of obedience, humility, and courage to keep sowing, trusting that the Lord gives the growth. May this season of conscious sowing lead you to experience the joy of seeing God’s kingdom bloom in every area of life, strengthening faith, strengthening hope, and moving you to depend more on Christ each day.
