The Most Holy Portion: Delight in God's Set-Apart Provision

Leviticus 2:3 is brief but sharp: the remainder of the grain offering is given to Aaron and his sons because it is a most holy part of the LORD’s food offerings. In the ancient cult this taught that worship was not merely ritual but a means by which God both received honor and provided for those who served him. The grain offering’s remainder, set apart as “most holy,” reminds us that holiness has a practical face—the holy is what nourishes and sustains the ministry of God’s worship.

This ancient provision finds its fullest meaning in Christ, our great High Priest. Jesus offered himself once for all, and his priestly work makes possible our participation in God’s life and holiness. If you find yourself saying, "I love it," in response to God’s set-apart gifts, that delight is itself a humble echo of Israel’s offering: a grateful recognition that the holy One both receives our devotion and feeds us for service. The holy portion is not distant; it becomes our nourishment in Christ.

Practically, this calls us to cultivate a love for what is set apart by God—Scripture, prayer, the sacraments, and the rhythms of communal worship—and to offer our daily labors as grain offerings of praise. To keep something “most holy” is to steward it, to protect it from being co-opted by lesser loves, and to use it to sustain others: pastors, neighbors, and the weak. Let that recognition shape choices about time, speech, generosity, and holiness of heart, so that what we receive as holy food becomes the fuel for sacrificial service.

Take heart: the same Lord who ordained a most holy portion for his priests provides for you through Jesus, the Good Shepherd and Priest. Hold fast to the delight you feel in his holiness, let it deepen into obedient love, and be nourished to serve—knowing that his provision is both gracious and sustaining. I love it; may you love it too, and go forth fed and faithful.
