Reading Isaiah 61:1 we find the revelation of a God who does not remain distant in the face of human pain. The prophet proclaims something that was fully fulfilled in Christ, for the Lord anointed Jesus with the Spirit to proclaim good news to the poor. This anointing shows that divine care has a human face and a historical mission, and is not an abstract theory. When Jesus declares that He came to comfort the brokenhearted, He shows that God knows the weight of our suffering. The passage reminds us that the presence of the Spirit inaugurates a new reality of restoration and dignity. It is proper to the Kingdom of God that the marginalized receive attention and liberating action. As we contemplate this verse, we are called to look to Christ as the incarnation of this liberation. Christian faith thus reveals itself as service to those who need it most, sustained by the anointing of the Spirit.
