When the Spirit Moves over Chaos

The opening scene of Scripture presents us with a formless and void earth, wrapped in darkness; over the waters, the Spirit of God was moving. There are moments in our lives when we can only emit a patient and vague sound — a "uuuu" — an expression of emptiness, of the void that cries out for meaning and for light. This primal word of the Bible reminds us that silence and confusion are not the end, but the setting in which God finds our heart.

The movement of the Spirit is silent preaching: before any created word, before visible order, comes the presence that prepares. In Christ, the Word made flesh (John 1), we see consummated the union between the divine breath and the creative speech; what the Spirit prepares, the Word inaugurates in life and form. Thus, the Genesis account points us to the sovereignty of God that is not distant from chaos, but that touches it, sustains it and redeems it.

Pastorally, this teaches us not to fear our condition of disorder when the Lord is still at work over the waters of our soul. Where there is darkness and a sense of emptiness, God’s first act is to move — not with punishing haste, but with a presence that generates trust and possibilities. Our concrete response is to allow the Spirit to reach us in prayer, silence and humble obedience, recognizing that creation and restoration begin where there is receptivity to His breath.

Therefore, if today your heart can only say "uuuu", remember: the Spirit that moved over the waters continues to move over your life and the Word of Christ brings order and purpose to chaos. Trust, wait and open yourself to the creating breath; God is transforming emptiness into life. Be encouraged to wait with faith, for He who spoke and brought everything into being did not leave your desert without promise.
