The Nephilim and the Greatness That Does Not Last

Genesis 6:4 mentions a mysterious people: the Nephilim, described as giants, heroes of antiquity, famous and feared men. The Word does not concern itself with answering all our curiosities about who exactly these people were, as the focus is not on historical or biological details, but on the spiritual message behind the narrative.

What the Bible emphasizes is the impact these men had: strength, fame, and reputation. They were individuals who drew everyone's attention, impressing with their presence, seeming unattainable, and achieving a prominent position. In the eyes of society, they dominated the scenes of the time and became a reference for power and success.

However, the context of the chapter shows that, alongside this human greatness, wickedness was multiplying on the earth. People's hearts were drifting further away from God, and spiritual corruption was spreading like a disease. The grand appearance of these men did not prevent the advance of sin or the moral deterioration of humanity.

Thus, we already perceive a profound and necessary contrast: a greatness that impresses on the outside, but does not withstand the judgment of God when sin governs the heart. The story of the Nephilim reminds us that fame, strength, and notoriety do not guarantee divine approval, and that what truly matters, before the Lord, is the condition of the heart and obedience to His will.
