In the beginning: the story that begins with God

Genesis 1:1 places us at the origin and gives us the heading of the greatest story: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." That creative verb places God as author and sovereign of everything that exists, and from that initial point we understand that our life, the world, and history have an intentional and personal origin.

From that creative act the earth and humankind are born, the realm for relationship with the Creator and human responsibility. We also know that in the biblical account sin will break in and fracture that relationship, but the fact that God is the beginning sustains the hope of restoration: even in the fall his purpose is not lost, but a plan of redemption begins that will run through all history.

That creative story then unfolds through the generations, and in particular in the call to Abram, from whom the promise that will shape the people and the messianic hope will be transmitted. Seeing the line that goes from creation to Abram reminds us that God acts in time, chooses people and families, and causes his purpose to advance through imperfect generations but called by his grace.

In pastoral and practical terms: live each day with the perspective that God is the origin of everything; acknowledge your condition before sin and rely on the faithfulness of the one who began the work. Cultivate faith in your home and sow truth in the coming generations, knowing that God works in family and public history. Take heart: walk trusting in the God who created everything from the beginning.
