In Genesis 6:4 we are shown a time when human history was strewn with giants and with a twisted grandeur, when the sons of God joined the daughters of men, and from that union arose heroes who would later become famous warriors. This passage, in its starkness, invites us to look beyond the surface of history to discern the hand of God that, even in times of confusion and fall, sustains the course of His purpose. It is not a celebration of earthly greatness, but a recognition that God, in His wisdom, allows human choices to reveal the fragility of our nature and, at the same time, His faithfulness to redeem it.
The reflection does not remain in historical curiosity, but points to the call that every generation receives: to choose whom we will serve. Amid darkness and corruption, God does not abandon His project of holiness and blessing for the nations. Our passage reminds us that each generation faces the temptation to trust in strength, in fame, or in the security promised by the world. However, true greatness does not arise from lineage or violence, but from an obedient relationship with God, which transforms the heart and calls us to live according to His will.
