Permission and responsibility at the table: Genesis 9:3

Genesis 9:3 states: "Everything that moves and has life will be food for you..." — there God grants Noah and his family explicit permission to eat meat after the flood. Scripture also presents the initial creative order indicating a plant-based diet (Gen 1:29-30), which shows that the original intention favored plants as food; however, the text of Genesis 9 introduces a new normative guidance for post-diluvian life. Thus, interpreting this passage as a divine endorsement of meat consumption is compatible with the straightforward sense of the verse.

This authorization is not a license to act without fear of God: it comes in the context of a covenant that preserves limits and duties. Immediately God prohibits the consumption of blood (v.4), reminding that life belongs to Him; further on, the Law and the biblical tradition regulate the treatment of animals and food, and the New Testament adds prudence regarding freedom and conscience (cf. Rom 14). Eating meat becomes an ordered freedom — and every Christian freedom requires obedience, reverence and care for one's neighbor.

In pastoral application, we are called to receive this permission with gratitude and wisdom: to choose dietary practices that express stewardship of creation, avoid excess, and care for animal welfare and the people involved in food production. When our freedom may wound the conscience of brothers and sisters, love leads us to abstain for the sake of the other; when there is doubt, seeking information, prayer and pastoral guidance is a path of prudence. The way we eat reveals our relationship with God and with creation.

May this text encourage us to live the freedom granted by God with responsibility and gratitude: may each meal be an occasion for thanksgiving, care and obedience. If questions or conflicts of conscience arise, seek the Lord in prayer and ask for wisdom to honor him in daily choices. Move forward trusting in the grace that guides our decisions and practice the love that builds up.
