Spirit of Wisdom to Praise Christ

When meditating on Ephesians 1:17 we are brought to the heart of Paul’s prayer: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the full knowledge of him. This petition is a pastoral key: knowing Christ is not merely acquiring information, but receiving from the Father the Spirit’s illumination to behold the glory of the Son and respond with authentic praise. Praising Christ arises from spiritual eyes opened to his person and work.

The spirit of wisdom and revelation acts where mind and heart meet. In careful reading of Scripture it exposes the greatness of Christ — his divinity, incarnation, death, and resurrection — and reveals how these truths shape our lives. When the Spirit opens the eyes of our understanding, the worship that arises is informed by truth and inflamed by gratitude: knowing him fully transforms knowledge into praise that is true and holy.

In practice, cultivating this knowledge requires discipline and dependence: praying for the gift of the Spirit (as Paul asks), meditating on Scripture with humility, participating in the community that proclaims Christ, and obeying the implications of the gospel in everyday life. It is not a merely intellectual effort, but a surrender that allows the Spirit to renew desires, thoughts, and actions so that our praise is consistent with the life we profess.

Therefore, draw near today to the Father with this prayer: that He would grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Jesus more fully. Expect the Spirit to reveal the glory of Christ, and let that knowledge produce constant praise in your life. Be encouraged: when you ask, you will receive illumination; when you know, you will praise; and when you praise, you will be increasingly conformed to the image of Christ.
