Be strong and courageous

In Joshua 1:18 the community receives a clear warning about the consequence of rebellion and, at the same time, a strong command: simply be strong and courageous. The text places that courage in the context of obeying the word entrusted to their leader; the unity and the people's mission depend on serious, committed obedience.

The severity of the passage is not an exaltation of human hardness but a demand for faithfulness to God that sustains the mission. When obedience fails, the community is exposed to fractures that prevent the fulfillment of the divine purpose. Being strong and courageous, then, means taking seriously what God has commanded and decisively protecting the collective fidelity so that God's plan may advance.

In practical life, being strong and courageous translates into concrete actions: listening to and applying God's word in daily life, lovingly correcting those who stray, persevering when difficulties arise, and leading with integrity even in the face of opposition. It is not one's own strength but confidence in the Lord's presence and promise that empowers obedience even when it is costly. Cultivate prayer, Bible reading, and community to sustain that courage.

May this word prompt you to a firm decision: do not excuse yourself because of fear or lukewarmness; fulfill what God has entrusted to you and lovingly protect the fidelity of your community. Walk today sustained by his Spirit: be strong and courageous.
