The Joy of the Union: Fasting and Celebrations under the Bridegroom

Jesus answered: “Can the wedding guests fast while celebrating with the bridegroom?” (Luke 5:34)

In Jesus' language, the kingdom of God reveals a time of fullness that is not limited to rituals, but to a joy that arises from the encounter with Christ. This verse confronts us with the understanding that the life of faith is not a slavery to forms, but a dance guided by the presence of the Bridegroom who approaches. When Jesus is among us, the feast of God’s love becomes the call to witness a joy that does not depend on circumstances, but on the firm trust of those who walk with Him. May we, today, welcome Jesus’ invitation to celebrate the grace that reaches us, recognizing that fasting can exist, but not as an end in itself, and rather as a means to deepen our hunger for the divine presence.

The context of this speech points to an integration between communion and spiritual discipline. Fasting, when necessary, points to a time of contemplation, repentance, and surrender, but the image of the Bridegroom celebrates the joy that overflows into communal life. We are called to seek balance between the stewardship of a contrite heart and the joy that springs from the encounter with Christ. Each day, the Lord calls us to recognize that the happiness of His kingdom is revealed in the practice of love, mercy, and faith in action, even when circumstances call for silence. May our faith not be merely private devotion, but a public exaltation of the living Christ, whose presence transforms our way of living, working, and relating to others.

Therefore, may each of our actions reflect the joy of the encounter with Jesus, the Bridegroom who calls us to full life. May the courage to trust in divine timing lead us to choices that honor the grace received, strengthening relationships, families, and communities. May this day be marked by mercy that heals, by humility that learns, and by hope that does not disappoint. And above all, may we be strengthened by the certainty that where Jesus is present, there is celebration, there is purpose, and there is victory over fear. May our walk, guided by the Word, become a life of serene courage, motivating every sister and brother to remain steadfast in faith and to continually celebrate the nearness of Christ. I encourage you to live today with living faith, constant joy, and the confidence that the Bridegroom is present among us, guiding us in every step.
