When Jesus declares, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments" (John 14:15), He unites love and obedience in an inseparable way. In this statement, the Lord makes it clear that, before God, love is not just a pleasant feeling, a strong emotion, or a well-formulated speech. There is something deeper at play: love, according to Christ, involves our entire being, reaching both what we feel and what we do.
This means that, for Jesus, true love is revealed in a heart that surrenders and in hands that respond with obedience. It is not just about saying that we love God, but about living in a way that is consistent with that declaration. To love, from the perspective of the gospel, is to allow the Lord to have authority over our decisions, our desires, and our paths.
Loving God is to desire to please Him more than to please ourselves. It is to place His will above our preferences, recognizing that He sees the complete picture of our lives. A person who truly loves God learns, little by little, to let go of controlling everything, trusting that the Father knows what is best, even when we do not fully understand.
Recognizing that He knows better than we do about what life, joy, and security are changes the way we live. Thus, when we speak of true love for God, we speak of a love that is realized in daily, practical, and real choices, aligned with the will of Jesus revealed in His Word. This love does not remain just in speech; it becomes visible in the obedience that arises from trust and devotion to the Lord.
