Sound the Trumpet: Awakening to the Lord

Abimael V.

The prophet Joel summons us with sonorous images: the trumpet in Zion, the alarm on the holy mountain, and the trembling earth, because 'the day of the LORD is coming; indeed it is near.' These words break through indifference and point to an ultimate reality: Christ is the Lord who will come in the consummation of all things. As good shepherds of our own souls, we must hear that call not as a mere historical announcement but as a pastoral warning about the imminence of judgment and the promise of reconciliation in Him.

The practical call of this text is clear: be awake and turn to the Lord. The trumpet demands an examination of life, sincere repentance, and a conversion that reshapes our priorities. In Christ we have the sure way for that change: his grace cleanses us, his Word corrects us, and his Spirit empowers us to live in obedience. It is not about paralyzing fear but a loving correction that produces fruits of righteousness: confession, restitution when possible, humble service, and constant fellowship with the Church.

The trembling caused by the nearness of the day of the Lord should also lead us to reverent hope. The same Jesus who comes as judge first came as Savior; in Him we find refuge and foundation for our lives. Faced with legitimate fear before judgment, we can respond with active faith—pray, watch, forgive, love—because Christ upholds his own and calls them to live in holiness while we await his manifestation.

Today the alarm sounds for you and for me: live in the light of his coming, love as He loved us, and seek his face with sincerity. May this awareness transform decisions, relationships, and daily labors; prepare your heart and share the hope of the Gospel with urgency and tenderness. Trust in the Lord who is coming, and remain steadfast in Him. Take heart!
