Staying Connected to the Source of Light

Tyhesia G.

Jesus’ words, “Let your light so shine before men,” remind us that we are not the source of the light—we are carriers of it. Just as every lamp must be plugged in to shine, our lives must stay connected to God, the true Light. Apart from Him, even our best efforts grow dim, driven more by pride or fear than by love. But when we draw near to the Father through prayer, His Word, and daily dependence, His brightness begins to fill and shape us. In Christ, we become like windows that let His light through, rather than walls that keep it out.

This shining is seen in “good works,” but not as a performance to impress people. Instead, it is the natural overflow of a heart that has been warmed and changed by God’s grace. Kindness to a neighbor, integrity at work, patience with a difficult family member, and generosity to someone in need are all ways His light quietly pushes back the darkness. These visible acts of love point beyond us to the God who has loved us first in Jesus. When our good works are rooted in Christ’s love, others can sense that there is a deeper Source behind what they see.

Our light also shines as we share the gospel in a world darkened by ignorance and sin. People around us may not understand God’s truth, or they may be trapped in patterns that lead only to more pain and confusion. As we gently speak about Jesus’ death and resurrection, His forgiveness, and His invitation to new life, we are bringing the light of His truth into those shadowed places. This does not always mean preaching a sermon; it can begin with a simple testimony, a Scripture shared in love, or a quiet word of hope. When our words about Christ are backed by a life shaped by Christ, the light becomes hard to ignore.

Staying connected to God as your Source is not about never failing, but about always returning. When you feel dim, weary, or unsure, you can come back to the Father who delights to refill and renew you. The Holy Spirit is faithful to help you in your weakness, to remind you of the gospel, and to strengthen you to love when you would rather withdraw. As you abide in Jesus today, trust that even small acts of obedience and small moments of courage are rays of His light in the darkness. Take heart: God has placed you where you are on purpose, and as you stay close to Him, He will shine through you more than you can see right now.
