Living in the Expanse: The Five Rs of a Gospel Life

On the second day of creation God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters" (Genesis 1:6), and in that word we glimpse the Lord's intention to create ordered space for life. The expanse is not merely a physical phenomenon but a theological image: God separates, defines, and makes room so that what is good can flourish apart from chaos.

When we think about becoming more than simply okay, this divine activity of defining and making space becomes a helpful picture for spiritual growth. I invite you to consider five Rs that flow from this creative ordering—Righteousness, Relationship, Rest, Restriction, Responsibility—as spiritual categories that help us inhabit the expanse God has made.

These Rs are not self-help slogans but gospel-shaped rhythms that point us back to the work of Jesus, who establishes our standing before God so we can live within the ordered space he provides. Righteousness is the place we begin; relationship is the space we inhabit; rest is the posture we practice; restriction is the boundary we accept; responsibility is the calling we fulfill, and all five are interwoven by the Creator's separating word that made room for human life and flourishing.

As we reflect on Genesis 1:6 we see that God was intentional about the space, and we are invited to consider how that intentionality shapes our souls. The expanse God made points us to a life that is more than surviving; it calls us to live redeemed, ordered, and flourishing in Christ.
