What makes my heart burn? Jesus spoke to them, and He still speaks to us today. But my heart burns when I expose myself to His word?
In the passage of Luke 24:32, we see two disciples who, walking with Jesus and hearing the Scriptures, discover that their heart burns when listening to revealed truth. It is not a superficial ardor, but a conviction that transforms the will and guides life. Our joy does not come from fleeting stimuli, but from the living presence of Christ who is revealed in the Scriptures and who is present in every teaching that the Spirit brings to our minds and to our hearts. When we approach the Word with humility and faith, the fire of God’s love is kindled, dispelling fears and strengthening hope.
This ardor does not arise from our human capacity, but from God’s action in us through faith. The Spirit bears witness with truth, lights the mind, and convicts of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. If our Christian experience is limited to rituals or hollow words, we risk growing cold; but if we open Scripture with prayer, confession, and expectation, our life is transformed by Christ’s direction. May that fire not be extinguished: may every reading, every meditation, every reflection in community lead to a life in accord with the Word and to faithful service in the Kingdom of God.
I encourage you to sustain this discipline: approach the Word with patience, allow the Spirit to reveal the truth to us, and respond in obedience and love. May the ardor of our hearts as we listen to Scripture translate into words of faith, acts of service, and a life that glorifies Christ every day.
