When we read Romans 5:3-5, something within us is astonished: how is it possible to "rejoice" in tribulations? Normally, we do everything to escape pain, problems, and the frustrations of daily life. But the Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, shows us that, in Christ, tribulation is not a dead end, but a path through which God works deeply in our hearts. In Jesus, suffering is not a waste of time, because it is in the hands of a wise, loving, and sovereign God. He does not waste any tear, any fatigue, or any struggle we face. On the contrary, He transforms all of this into something that, in the end, brings us closer to the character of Christ.
Paul states that tribulation produces perseverance, and this means that, by going through difficult times with Christ, we learn not to give up. Perseverance is not human stubbornness; it is firmness sustained by the grace of God. Each day that you choose to continue trusting, praying, and obeying, even without seeing immediate results, your heart is being strengthened. This is how God teaches us to walk by faith and not by sight, to depend less on feelings and more on promises. And, little by little, we begin to realize that we are not the same: something in us has become firmer, more mature, more stable in God.
This perseverance, the text says, produces an approved character, a refined heart, tested, more like that of Jesus. Struggles reveal what was already within us, but they are also opportunities for the Holy Spirit to shape our way of reacting, speaking, choosing, and loving. When, amidst pain, we choose the path of trust, forgiveness, and humility, God is forming in us a character that passes the test and remains standing. And from this approved character arises a hope-filled confidence, which is not empty optimism, but certainty that God is acting even when we do not understand. This hope does not disappoint us because it does not rely on circumstances, but on the love of God poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, the tribulations you face today do not define the end of your story; in Christ, they can become a place of growth and a deeper encounter with God. You are not alone: the same Spirit that pours God's love into your heart is the one who sustains you in every step, even on days when you can only say: "Lord, help me." Stay firm, even if in small steps, believing that God is using every situation to strengthen your faith, mature your character, and fill you with a hope that does not fail. Look to the cross and the resurrection of Jesus: there lies the definitive proof that God is capable of transforming the greatest pain into the greatest victory. Today, you can rest in this truth and move forward, trusting that, in Christ, your tribulation is not the end, but the path through which God leads you to a deeper, solid, and hope-filled life in Him.
