Jesus uses two short parables to reveal a central truth: the Kingdom of God cannot be understood by repeating old practices without an inner renewal. The patch on a new garment tears the old cloth, for the patch pulls away from the garment and the new fabric shrinks and does not fit the old fiber; in the same way, one cannot pour new wine into old wineskins, because the wine could ferment and increase pressure, destroying both the liquid and the skins. Thus, new wine requires new wineskins.
This language of Jesus points to a transformation that is not only external but involves the heart and the whole life. What is new of the kingdom does not coexist well with old mechanisms that produced a predictable and sterile spirituality. It is necessary to let the interior be renewed by the presence of the resurrected Christ, so that faith is not a technique but a living relationship with God, which transforms John-do-joia polished into a person of authentic faith who breathes by the work of the Spirit.
At the core, Jesus invites us to abandon dependence on empty rituals and to make space for God’s new way of acting: not by repetition, but by the transformative work of the Gospel in us. When the heart is renewed, the practices that arise are not portraits of an ancient tradition, but spontaneous expressions of life in Christ. The Kingdom of God grows not by external adjustment but by an inner change that radiates into relationships, choices, and testimony.
May we, today, welcome the new wine of the Kingdom with new vessels of humility, faith, and obedience. May each day be an opportunity to renew our minds and hearts by the Word, so that the Gospel is not an old garment that seems suitable only externally, but a new robe of righteousness that covers our entire life. May our hope be steadfast: the Lord can renew our inner being so that joy, truth, and holiness flourish, bringing courage to live the faith with boldness and love.
