Right now the axe of God’s judgment is ready to cut down the roots of trees. Indeed, every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
The image of the axe confronts us with the holiness of God and the reality of His judgment on that which bears no fruit. This is not merely a warning, but a merciful call to examine our lives, to identify the reasons our fruits may be lacking, and to return to the fertile ground of grace to produce what pleases the Lord. When human fear yields to the sovereignty of God, we discover that true security is not in our works, but in the work Christ has already accomplished and in the life that flourishes by the Holy Spirit within us.
This passage invites us to examine the root: what roots feed our actions? Is it faith in the grace of Christ or the pursuit of recognition, status, or comfort? We can remember that the quality of our fruit reveals the source of our life. If the trunk is united to Jesus, the fruits will be the work of grace and obedience. As followers of Christ, we are called to daily repentance that leads us to live in accordance with the kingdom of God, where righteousness, mercy, and faith are manifested in concrete acts of love toward God and toward others.
May this reminder not intimidate us without direction, but motivate us to seek the Lord with humility, to ask Him to heal our root and teach us to cultivate a life that remains; that, when we look to Jesus, we can say with gratitude: yes, here is fruit that glorifies God. Let us move forward with hope and courage, knowing that God is faithful to give abundant life to those who draw near to Him with a contrite and obedient heart.
