Then the Lord God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18).
The first time the need for something not being good is revealed is in the absence of the woman; it reminds us that creation has a merciful design: communion. God does not want man to walk isolated in a world of responsibilities and temptations; His goodness is expressed in the creation of an appropriate, distinct, and complementary helper, a companion who accompanies, corrects, sustains, and elevates. In this passage we observe that loneliness was not God’s will for man, but a call to seek the relationship designated by Him. The presence of the woman is not an ornament, but an essential part of the human purpose to live in love, obedience, and service to God.
When man and woman are interwoven by divine design, opportunities arise to practice humility, patience, and communication that strengthen family and community life. This truth invites us to evaluate our relationships: are we cultivating relationships that honor God and promote mutual edification? Do we also seek the counsel and vision that come from the Lord to walk together in obedience and mercy? May each day, at home and in the church, reveal that loneliness is not the norm, but the call to take advantage of the blessing of blessed companionship, so that our living reflects the communion that Christ brings to His people, and that our hope is strengthened in the mutual support He instituted. I encourage seeking God in every interaction, valuing the presence of brothers and sisters who strengthen us, and living in the grace of His design.
