The Love that Sustains Everything

Benicio J.

When Jesus summarizes all the Law and the Prophets in two commandments of love, He reveals that the center of Christianity is not a set of rules, but a living and loving relationship with God. More than demanding performance, the Lord desires communion; before any service, ministry, or activity, what He seeks is to be loved with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your understanding.

This means that following Christ is not, first and foremost, about fulfilling a list of spiritual tasks, but living in response to the love He has already demonstrated on the cross. We do not begin the Christian walk trying to earn God's favor; we walk from the certainty that we have already been loved, sought, and reached by Him. Obedience, then, ceases to be mere obligation and becomes a natural fruit of a heart impacted by that love.

We love because He loved us first, and the Gospel reminds us that this love does not originate in us, but in God. He is the source, the origin, and the sustenance of all true Christian love. When we recognize that the initiative was His and continues to be His, we are freed from the illusion that spiritual life ultimately depends on our effort or our ability to maintain a perfect standard.

Thus, Christianity does not rely on human willpower, but on the grace of a God who draws us to Himself with faithful love. When this truth descends to the heart, faith ceases to be a heavy burden and becomes a grateful and confident response to the love of Christ. Instead of living tired, trying to deserve God's love, we rest in the certainty that we are already loved, and from that rest springs a life of sincere and persevering devotion.
