Fear the Lord, Lack Nothing

Psalm 34:9-11 gives a simple, steady invitation: “Fear the Lord, you his saints; for those who fear him lack nothing. Even young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” These verses sit in a Psalm of testimony and praise. David writes from a place of deliverance — having experienced trouble and God’s rescue — and now calls others to trust the same faithful God. The “fear” spoken of is not paralyzing dread but reverent awe, a posture that recognizes God’s power, goodness, and authority over our lives.

To understand the context: Psalm 34 is a song of thanksgiving after God delivered David from danger (1 Samuel 21–22 offers the background where he feigned madness to escape danger). The psalm alternates between personal testimony (“I sought the Lord, and he answered me”) and practical encouragement for the faithful. Verses 9–11 summarize the Psalm’s point: those who revere and seek God experience his provision and care even when the world is hungry or insecure. David contrasts the vulnerability of “young lions” with the security of those who rely on God, showing that earthly strength is no substitute for divine provision.

Practically today, this means we are invited to cultivate reverent trust. When fear, lack, or anxiety whispers that we are alone or ill-equipped, the Psalm redirects our gaze to the Lord’s character: compassionate, just, and attentive. Seeking God is an active habit — prayer, Scripture, and obedience — that trains us to depend on his sufficiency rather than our resources. The promise isn’t a guarantee of every desire fulfilled but that those who truly seek the Lord will receive what is good and necessary according to his loving wisdom.

Take this encouragement into your day: stand in humble reverence, ask God for what you need, and listen as he teaches you. Let the truth of Psalm 34:9–11 steady your heart — fearing the Lord brings provision and peace even amid want. May you be aware of God’s attentive presence and walk in his provision today. God bless you and have a peaceful, hope-filled day.
