He Who Is Life

Jesus' words in John 11:25-26 confront us with the heart of Christian hope: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" Spoken to Martha at the tomb of her brother Lazarus, these words come at a moment thick with grief. Martha had confessed her faith that Jesus was the Messiah (John 11:27), yet she was still wrestling with the reality of death. Jesus answers not with philosophical argument but with a declaration of identity—He is the source and conqueror of death itself.

Context sharpens the promise. Lazarus had already been dead four days; the sorrow around the tomb was raw and present. Jesus' declaration precedes the miracle of raising Lazarus, showing that the resurrection He offers is not merely future doctrine but present power. By saying "I am the resurrection and the life," Jesus claims authority over both physical death and the deeper death of separation from God. His question, "Do you believe this?" is not rhetorical; it invites each of us to name where we stand in the face of suffering and loss.

This passage encourages us for today in two practical ways. First, it steadies our hearts when loss or fear threatens to unmoor us: belief in Jesus does not deny pain, but it places pain within the scope of a loving, living Lord whose purposes outlast our present darkness. Second, it reorients our daily living—because life in Christ transcends mortality, each choice to trust and follow becomes part of an eternal story. Whether you're carrying grief, doubt, or the ordinary anxieties of life, let this promise shape your response: Jesus is life now and forever, and trusting Him changes how we face today.

Take a moment to answer Jesus' question honestly: Do you believe this? If yes, receive courage to live boldly and compassion to walk with others who ache. If you're unsure, bring that uncertainty to Him—He meets honest faith and honest doubt alike. May the truth that "He is the resurrection and the life" give you comfort, direction, and hope for the day. Blessings and peace to you as you go forward.
